Liquid screed (also called flowing screed) is a free-flowing floor screed that is pumped into place and spreads across the floor area to form a level surface ready for floor finishes. It is commonly used in extensions, new-build homes and commercial floors, and is often chosen over traditional sand and cement screed where underfloor heating is installed.
Where liquid screed is used
- Ground floors in house extensions and new builds
- Floors with underfloor heating pipework
- Larger open-plan floor areas
- Commercial and light industrial floors, subject to specification
Liquid screed and traditional screed
Traditional sand and cement screed is laid semi-dry and compacted and levelled by hand. Liquid screed flows around pipework and into corners, so it is usually laid faster across larger areas. Which is right depends on the floor build-up, the specified depth, the finish going on top and the programme. If you have a specification from an architect, engineer or flooring contractor, send it with your enquiry. See our floor screed page for traditional screed supply.
Products and depths
Screed type and minimum depth should follow the specification and the manufacturer's guidance for the product being used. We supply all types of screed, liquid and traditional. Minimum depth depends on the product and your design – we confirm when we quote. We can supply and lay liquid screed, and pump it into place.
Preparing the floor
- Insulation and edge strip fitted around the perimeter
- Membrane laid and taped to stop the screed escaping
- Underfloor heating pipes fixed down and pressure tested
- Datum levels marked so the depth is consistent
- Doorways and openings dammed off
These steps are normally carried out by the screed installer or main contractor. Ask us if you are not sure who is responsible on your job.
Drying and floor finishes
Drying times depend on the product, depth, ventilation and temperature. Floor finishes should only be laid once the screed has dried to the level required by the flooring manufacturer. Follow the drying guidance for the specific product supplied.

Frequently asked questions
How much liquid screed do I need?
Multiply the floor area (m²) by the depth in metres. For example 40 m² at 50 mm is 40 × 0.05 = 2.0 m³. Send us the figures and we can sense-check them before you order.
Is liquid screed suitable for underfloor heating?
Liquid screed is widely used over underfloor heating because it flows around the pipes. See our underfloor heating screed page for more detail.
How quickly can I walk on liquid screed?
This depends on the product and site conditions. This depends on the product and your design – we confirm when we quote.
